Tom’s double at Captain’s expense

Man in form Tom Ricketts, along with Dan Featherstone, took the Aggregate Stableford on a card play off from the Captain and Mike Troup. Having won the Simister Cup last week, Tom will no doubt attract the attention of the handicapper!
Tom and Dan racked up 73 points, with 39 on the back nine. In third were Featherstone senior and Jerry Dixon
The comp started with a heavy frost, but we enjoyed a beautiful day on what is now a very dry and tidy course. All we need is some warmth!!

Arctic conditions for Simister Cup

In conditions that you’d associate with Ranulph Fiennes, the Simister Cup final went ahead yesterday. Only the huskies were missing. Those in the locker room adding seemingly endless layers of clothing were really cheered by Mark Walker’s statement that the wind chill factor meant it was minus 6! Stood on the 6th tee nobody was disagreeing.

Winner of the cup was Tom Ricketts, with a very creditable 36 points. Gary Johnstone’s 35 was also some score in these conditions.

The subsidiary stableford was won by Ron Ricketts with 32, so a good weekend for that household.

The season begins

The 87th Opening Sides matches [Stuart Hall has played in most of them] took place in cold and wet conditions. Played a week earlier than normal, conditions were certainly not comparable to the shirt sleeve weather of last year.In fact that must have been the ONLY shirt sleeve weather last year.
There appeared to be an outbreak of John Daly style trousers, but it’s unlikely that Charles will be stocking these any time soon!. The President hasn’t played much golf for a year or more, so it was good to see him back and he’d picked a very decent partner in Max Penney.

“Deaks” received just a few comments about the choice of trousers!

Spotlight on the Roll Up

Started around eleven years ago, the Wednesday Gents’ “Roll Up” continues to be enthusistically supported by a considerable percentage of the male membership. Come rain or shine a band of hardy members turns up each Wednesday lunchtime for the obligatory draw for partners on the first tee.

Driving in 2013

The common complaint amongst members today seemed to be about colds and flu rather than banging hangovers. But we had a good turnout for the annual renewal of the New Year drive-in. The showers abated enough for three decent drives to be despatched onto the sodden fairway.

The Captain is not hanging back with this one!

End of another season

2012 will be remembered for the truly awful weather we’ve been subjected to. But despite that we’ve had great year with Captain Rick Ford and President Brian Foden whose teams did battle once again in the 86th renewal of Closing Sides.

Fourth hole-in-one for Tom

Tom Lawton recorded his fourth hole in one yesterday, on the 18th at Sandiway. He was playing in the A Tour event and came a creditable 5th.
With aces at this frequency Tom could set some sort of record in a few years!

Success for Phil

New club member Phil Wander has really taken to Alderley Edge GC, and with the help of Charles and Eddie in the Pro Shop has seen some great strides forward with his game.

Phil, a retired dentist, wrote as follows:

Earlier this year I joined Alderley Edge Golf Club . I have been playing enjoyable but frustrating golf for about 18 years , handicap 20 ,and unable to find any sort of consistency.  Having recently retired from dentistry, I thought I might be able to fill some other types of holes – the larger golf ones!
After a series of excellent lessons with Ed Parker, the assistant pro at AEGC and some help and purchases from the Pro-Shop (thank you Charles) I recently achieved success, winning prizes at Stockport, Caldy and a major prize at the British Dental Association autumn meeting at Ashton Under Lyne.
What is the secret of success ?
There is no secret !
Just a good coach ( thanks again Ed )  tuition, lots of practice   “the harder I practice the luckier I get “( Gary Player )
And remember “ success is the ability to avoid failure “

Phil Wander

Phil’s story illustrates perfectly the quality of support available from our professional team of Charles and Eddie, and what can be achieved with a bit of effort.
No doubt Phil will be drilling those iron shots and extracting maximum benefit from his membership (sorry, couldn’t resist!)
