Winter League

Final League update
The denoument of this year’s Winter League offered up one of the closest finishes for years. With Mr Ford’s team a point ahead of the Captain and Pro, and two ahead of Team F, it was in their hands. They succumbed, however, to Bill Fisher and Chris Hills, leaving the result hanging on the Captain/ Pro match against Pete Wood and Jerry Dixon. One up playing 16th, Jerry birdied from a dodgy position in the bunker. Needing only a half to win on 17, Mr Wood, who’d given Team F the lead on 13th, contrived to miss from 14 inches! The Pro grazed the hole on 18 for a biride, leaving myself with two putts for it from 15 feet. As the saying goes, if you’ve got two putts, take them.
A tremendously contested league, complete with usual AEGC banter, and ultimatley Team F winning from Team B by virtue of having won the head-to-head match.

Betterball win for yellow ball duo

Bernie Cummings and Doug Burns, habitual users of yellow balls, won the betterball stableford with a creditable 45 points.
The morning players in particualr saw a “variety” of weather; sun, frost, hailstones and heavy showers.

Gary in the winner’s circle

First out at 8am (and with no frost this week!) Gary Johnstone got it to the turn in one under for 22 points. The back nine wasn’t quite as good, but Gary ran out an easy winner with an excellent 39 points, runner up with 36 was Barry Lewis. With the CSS again up to 70, this brought Gary back into Category 1.

Bernie wins first medal

This would have been good preparation for the Masters. Our putting surfaces may not be emerald green but they are probably about the same pace as Augusta’s, and this led to some quite comical putting displays, particularly on the second where the greenkeeper who cut the hole on the front slope must have had a mischievous grin on his face!
But the conditions certainly suited Bernie Cummings who shot a 64, maybe he had his eyes shut while putting as well!

Division 1 was settled on a card play off, Paul Ellis coming out as winner ahead of Bill Fisher

Tom Lawton deserves a mention, his 68 gross, nett 69, was an excellent knock in tricky conditions. Mind you, it does help somewhat when you knock in three 2’s!

Tom’s double at Captain’s expense

Man in form Tom Ricketts, along with Dan Featherstone, took the Aggregate Stableford on a card play off from the Captain and Mike Troup. Having won the Simister Cup last week, Tom will no doubt attract the attention of the handicapper!
Tom and Dan racked up 73 points, with 39 on the back nine. In third were Featherstone senior and Jerry Dixon
The comp started with a heavy frost, but we enjoyed a beautiful day on what is now a very dry and tidy course. All we need is some warmth!!

Arctic conditions for Simister Cup

In conditions that you’d associate with Ranulph Fiennes, the Simister Cup final went ahead yesterday. Only the huskies were missing. Those in the locker room adding seemingly endless layers of clothing were really cheered by Mark Walker’s statement that the wind chill factor meant it was minus 6! Stood on the 6th tee nobody was disagreeing.

Winner of the cup was Tom Ricketts, with a very creditable 36 points. Gary Johnstone’s 35 was also some score in these conditions.

The subsidiary stableford was won by Ron Ricketts with 32, so a good weekend for that household.

Doug is first winner of 2013

Doug Burns, with 23 points, comfortably won the Simister Cup 4th round on a day of fine weather we’ve not seen for ages. Second was Paul Grundy (20pts) with Andy Marshall third with 19.

Captain’s last hurrah

Today was Captain Rick’s last day in office. A good turnout at the presentation to finish his year in style

No this picture was not posed! Seemingly somebody had a rather poor round!!
