Mixed Knockout for the Barbara Ames Trophy 2010

A total of 22 pairs competed for the Barbara Ames trophy in 2010.
The eventual winners who fought literally through hell and high water (well definitely the “high water” bit!) were Brian and Liz McGuire thus giving Brian the icing on a very successful Captain’s year cake. The pair are seen below accepting their prize from the new Captain and Lady Captain at the Mixed Christmas Party.
Liz gave a reflective winner’s speech in which she acknowledged the efforts and camaraderie of all their opponents and gave particular praise to runners up Alison and John Roberts

Am-Am Salver 26th September

The rumour is that Alison Roberts has been head-hunted to assist the Americans with team selection for the 2012 Ryder Cup!
When she hand picked her team to play the AmAm Salver competition she chose a winning combination of Steve Smith, Jeff Wortley and John “Wildcard” Roberts to play with.
Their winning score was 78 points in tough conditions due to heavy rainfall in the preceding days.

In second place were Mr Captain, Liz McGuire and Mike and Olwen Davies.

Alison and John and the Captain and Liz also met in the final of the Barbara Ames Knockout . On this occasion the honours were reversed and the Captain and Liz won 6 and 4. Congratulations, Captain and Liz!
The Barbara Ames prize will be presented at Mixed Closing Sides on October 24th. The entry sheet for this competition is on the Mixed noticeboard

Mixed Open Competition for the Jubilee Trophy July 4th 2010

This year’s competition for the Jubilee Trophy was contested by a international field of 68 representing 19 golf clubs. (International because there were 4 members of Denbigh GC competing!)
The day stayed almost entirely dry and many stayed to enjoy another of Hilary’s delicious meals before the presentation of prizes.
Pictured below are the winners Bruce and Patricia Philip from Bramhall Park GC who had 36 points.

5 pairs had a total of 35 points but after a card countback the results were:
2nd:- Tracy Smith and Jeff Wortley (leaders in the clubhouse all day until the penultimate card came in but it didnt cause Jeff to lose his sense of humour!!)

3rd:- Mike Magee and Celia Berent
4th:- John Selwood (Stone GC) and Wendy Rule
5th:- Mr and Mrs Pendergast (Birchwood GC)

Nearest the pin on 4th hole (3’ 2”) Stan Roberts (Denbigh GC)

There were a total of 10 2s: Stuart and Marion Hall and Mr and Mrs Pendergast had 2 each. Others were Tracy Smith and Jeff Wortley, David Macmillan and Joanne Twibell (Peover), Clive Westbrook and Janet Bishop (Ringway), Mike Magee and Celia Berent, Mr and Mrs Bourke (Birchwood) and Mr Roberts and Mrs Jones of Denbigh.

A BIG thank you to all who took part.

A Message from Mixed Golf

The mixed golf season is up and running…..

Mixed opening sides on the 21st March kicked off the mixed golf season. Thanks go to Marion and Stewart Hall for their flawless organisation and Hillary and the team for a superb dinner to round off the day.

Helen and Philip Clay have lots more events planned for the rest of the year including a ‘Mixed Day Out’ to Curzon Park in Chester on the 11th June. This is always a fun day and of course every-one is invited to join in. All you need is a partner …of the opposite sex…. but not necessarily your husband or wife. In fact sometimes it can be a big advantage if this is not the case! Even If you don’t have a partner and would like to join in, just let us know and we can usually sort something out.

This year our Archie Preston mixed alliance experience was short. The team fought valiantly around a very slushy Harwood golf course but in the end, local knowledge and the ability of the home team to master putting across a ploughed field meant a victory for Harwood. We will try again next year.

Keep your eyes on the mixed notice board outside the locker room entrance for details of up and coming events and good luck to you all in the Barbara Ames knockout
